A Back-to-School Prayer For the Children We Love

Tomorrow, thousands of children will walk into classrooms carrying backpacks, excitement, and maybe a few butterflies.

One of them is my grandson, Lucas. Tonight, I'll be praying for him—and for every child beginning a new school year.

If there's a child on your heart tonight, I hope you'll join me.

This morning, our youth pastor prayed a special blessing over the children in our congregation and throughout our community as they prepared to head back to school. As he prayed, my mind drifted back to those first days of school when my own children were little.

I remember the rush to make sure everything was ready.

The outfit laid out the night before. The backpack filled with fresh school supplies. Lunches packed. Forms signed. An early bedtime so they wouldn't be exhausted.

Those things mattered.

But if I could do it all again, I would spend even more time preparing their hearts for the season ahead.

Today's parents are carrying that same weight, juggling countless details as they send their children into a new school year. As grandparents, our role may look a little different. We may not be packing backpacks anymore, but we can still help prepare their hearts through prayer.

This year, I'm praying especially for my grandson, Lucas, as he begins a new school in a new community. Like so many children, he's stepping into unfamiliar classrooms, new friendships, and new routines.

We may not be packing backpacks anymore, but we can still help prepare their hearts through prayer.

A Prayer for the First Day of School

The LORD bless you and keep you;
the LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the LORD turn His face toward you and give you peace.
— Numbers 6:24–26 (ESV)

Moses spoke these words over the people of Israel as a blessing, reminding them of God's presence, favor, and peace as they journeyed through the wilderness.

I believe the Lord still delights in His children praying these very words over the people they love. As the children in our lives begin a new school year, may this ancient blessing become our prayer for them.

May the Lord bless you and keep you on this first day of school.

A Prayer of Protection

I pray that God will watch over you throughout this school year, guarding both your steps and your heart.

May He protect you from words that wound and doubts that steal your confidence. May you always know that you are deeply loved, wonderfully made, and never alone.

May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you this new school year.

A Prayer of Blessing and Favor

May God bless you with encouraging friendships, caring teachers, and a love of learning that grows with each new day.

May He fill you with courage when you feel afraid, kindness when someone needs a friend, wisdom to make good choices, and confidence that comes from knowing you belong to Jesus.

May the Lord turn His face toward you and give you peace.

A Prayer for Peace

I pray your heart will rest in the quiet confidence that God is with you wherever you go.

May His peace guard your heart and mind, help you stand for what is right, and give you strength to choose kindness, extend grace, and walk in love each day.

Amen.

Of all the gifts we can give the children we love, prayer may be the greatest of all.

Continue the Journey

If this prayer encouraged you, I'd love for you to continue the journey with me.
